What are the top 7 digital marketing tools?

what is digital marketingIf you’ve been thinking about ways to improve your market performance, it likely comes as no surprise that these are the top 7 digital marketing tools today:

  1. Social media, as well as tools to help automate the process or posting content consistently to your chosen platforms.
  2. SEO, including local SEO, is important for many small businesses that rely on a local market. In today’s world, dominated by AI, small businesses must also consider how to leverage GEO (generative engine optimization) as more search users opt for AI-generated answers rather than clicking links. Getting your brand mentioned in these answers is essential for growth.
  3. Content creation is challenging not only because it’s time-consuming, but because it takes unique talents such as graphic design, writing, and editing, as well as task management to ensure a steady stream of fresh, valuable content.
  4. Email marketing to maintain relationships with your prospects and customers to nurture future sales.
  5. A website with appropriate landing pages is still essential despite a mistaken belief that you only need social media to succeed in digital marketing.
  6. Data insights that help drive data-based decisions rather than running your business based on hunches, old tactics, and limited thinking.
  7. Advertising both online and offline is a key element of your digital strategy.

DIY digital marketing challenges

You only have to look at this list to figure out that the time and expertise necessary to perform all seven of these tasks is enormous. It might seem tempting to hand over all or some of these tasks to an outside agency rather than do DIY digital marketing. And, there’s a good reason for this type of thinking, as you can see in the image below.

Making a big blunder with a forward-facing strategy like digital marketing can quickly backfire to cause reputational damage that is challenging to overcome, making the choice to hire an experienced outside firm attractive. Just consider this post from a Chrysler exec, which cost the company sales and resulted in them spending good money to counteract the thoughtless tweet.

Or this one from Asus, blamed on a young intern, which didn’t do much to rescue the company from their own mistake.

Yet, hiring a good, experienced marketing firm is expensive, often beyond the reach of most small businesses, and hiring a firm without the right qualifications is not only a waste of money, but can result in the same reputational damage as doing DIY digital marketing badly.

Doing DIY digital marketing effectively

Alternatively, you can use a bunch of tools to help manage your DIY digital marketing to reduce risks and improve results. The challenge is that many of these tools are prohibitively expensive, costing $1000s every month. Similarly, hiring trained digital marketing staff isn’t easy, as the number of eligible candidates is far lower than the number needed, as you can see below. This shows that digital marketing is the most important skill for success, while it’s challenging to find, according to CMOs.

Since neither of these options works well for small businesses, here’s my advice for the best DIY digital marketing tools for small businesses.

Best DIY digital marketing tools for small businesses

I’ve worked in digital marketing, helping small businesses succeed against their bigger competitors for decades, almost since the advent of the internet. Before that, I worked in direct marketing, which shares many of the same strategic underpinnings, for major corporations like AT&T for years. I run my own small business marketing firm and have a successful coaching program to help other small businesses succeed. Here are my favorite tools to help you, as well.

1. Social media management tools

Knowing when to post and producing sufficient content to meet the publishing standards needed for success requires a sound marketing automation tool. You can spend a ton of money on this function, but, for a small business with limited resources, here are my recommendations:

  • Buffer, which is my favorite. They offer a free account that can handle up to three social media platforms. The tool lets you schedule a bunch of posts at once, which reduces time and effort when it comes to maintaining a schedule. AI helps you optimize your content and posting schedule to make the most of each post. I would start with the free version to test it out, then move on to a paid version if you find it works.
  • Another good option is Hootsuite, which is similar to Buffer, although it doesn’t offer as many bells and whistles.
  • HubSpot offers marketing automation and a bunch of other tools in its marketing hub. This is free, with limited features, and offers affordable packages as you grow. The hub includes email marketing, as well. Note, however, that it’s fairly expensive once you go beyond basic marketing needs.

SEO & GEO

Let’s dispense with GEO first, as there aren’t currently many, if any, tools that help you show up in AI-generated content. For the most part, you’re on your own, as the tools out there mostly track your mentions rather than offer solutions to get there. I did write content that helps you understand what these LLMs are looking for and how to show up in AI content.

For SEO, again, you’ll find a variety of tools to track your SEO performance, but the key to SEO is in your hands. Beyond keyword analysis, which you’ll find available for free through the Google Ads platform (this requires an account, but doesn’t require you to do advertising) and for a fee through companies like SEMrush, there really aren’t any tools to improve your SEO. Again, it requires great, valuable content posted on a regular basis.

Toward that end, SEO plugins for WordPress, like Rank Math SEO, Yoast, and All in One SEO, help you craft better content by scoring your content as you write. Most offer AI tools to help you improve your content.

Content creation

A recurring theme is the importance of great content, including a variety of formats like video, image, and text. AI offers solutions that reduce your time challenges, and several tools fit within the budget of most small businesses.

content marketingThe key to DIY digital marketing is to recognize the “right” way to use AI. First, never, ever simply copy and paste from AI into your digital media. AI makes mistakes and copying makes you look foolish when you post inaccurate information. Second, you’re not contributing anything beyond what’s already out there when you copy and paste. While Google doesn’t penalize this (yet), it doesn’t position you as an expert, which matters for GEO.

Instead, use AI tools as a starting point in crafting your own content. There are limitations to what these tools will do, so bear that in mind.

  • ChatGPT is the most well-known of the AI tools. It offers a free tier with limited usage and a $20/ month tier for heavier usage. I’ve used ChatGPT and found it acceptable.
  • Gemini is from Google. That’s the one I pay for, again $20/month. I find fewer mistakes on this platform, more detailed responses to prompts, and better graphics.
  • Anthropic’s claim to fame is its focus on generating code.

Speaking of visual content creation, you don’t need AI for every content creation task. For instance,

  • Canva is a great tool for creating visual content, including short videos. It offers free graphics and templates, although you’ll likely need a paid version to get the most from the product, which is $18/ month for Pro or $25/ month for Business.
  • Adobe Express is also free, with a paid option that gives you more features. The price for individuals is between $9.99/ month and $19.99/ month, which includes AI tools as well as Photoshop.
  • Adobe Creative Cloud is the most powerful of the image/ video creation tools as well as the most expensive, at $70/month. It takes dedication to learn how to use the various tools like Photoshop and Premiere Pro effectively, although Adobe offers online training.

Email marketing

Email is an essential tool for DIY digital marketing success. You should send regular updates to segmented subscribers to nurture leads and build strong relationships, as this is the most effective digital marketing tool at your disposal, as you can see below.

A variety of cost-effective tools are available for the small business marketer. These include:

  • HubSpot, which I use.
  • Mailchimp
  • Salesforce
  • MailerLite
  • Omnisend

Website and landing pages

Many small businesses don’t think they need a website in 2026, but that’s wrong. A website gives you a platform you own, so it won’t disappear or be controlled by a billionaire with his/ her own interests at heart (like social media).

If you think it’s too expensive to build and maintain a website, you’re wrong. Do you have $150 a year? Then you can afford a website. I even wrote an ebook (free) for small businesses that want to craft a killer website without hiring a designer. My advice is to avoid those website builders, like Squarespace and Wix, as their websites aren’t as easy to build as promised, look too much the same as every other website, and have poor SEO. And moving from one of those website builders later isn’t easy.

HubSpot Marketing Hub offers suggestions to help craft great landing pages and other elements to make your website rock.

Digital analytics

This might be the toughest and most expensive part of your DIY digital marketing strategy. That’s because you can really fake analytics and deriving insights that help guide your firm toward better decisions with all the data available isn’t for the faint of heart. Yet, analytics and the insights it generates will prove your most valuable asset moving forward.

Analytics tools are mostly beyond the reach of most small businesses. For instance, Google Analytics for enterprise businesses is around $100,000/ month at last check. And, business analysts are among the most in-demand specialists who command high salaries.

Google Analytics is the best tool out there, and it’s free. It brings together metrics from your website, Google Ads, and the Google Play Store into one place. Google even offers training on how to get the most from your account.

Here’s how to get the most from Google Analytics

Create an account

You can allow as many users as you want to access metrics. You can even determine which metrics and which levels of analysis are available to each user.

Connect your website, Google Ads, and Google Play Store accounts

A small snippet of code is generated when you create your analytics account. Simply copy and paste this code into the head section of your website (most SEO plugins make this easy for you to do once). Using the same Google account automatically links the other two platforms to analytics.

Set up a dashboard

marketing metrics

Set up a dashboard by selecting key metrics related to your business. These dashboards are interactive, allowing you to change time periods, compare time periods, and build more nuanced insights by breaking metrics down by things like platform, post, or target market.

Create events

You can create up to 10 events to track your performance toward these goals.

Create reports

Reports allow you to customize the way you view your performance and the graphics used to display them.

Monitor on a daily basis

Advertising

Because organic reach on social and search is declining precipitously, DIY digital marketing almost certainly requires advertising to reach your goals. Luckily, digital advertising is very affordable for even the smallest of businesses.

The advantage of digital advertising, and what makes it so economical, is the ability to laser focus your ads on your target market, reducing wasted budget reaching folks who won’t buy your products. Of course, that assumes you’ve done a good job of defining your target market in the first place.

Consider that advertising of any type requires more than a one-shot deal. You should commit to pulsing, which means running ads in spirts, or running ads continuously for a time. Have a clear goal in mind when creating ads and always include a clear call-to-action so viewers have a way to respond. Buttons tend to work better than links on ads (and on your landing pages). Change up your ads periodically to avoid ad burnout.

Conclusion

DIY digital marketing isn’t easy, but you can manage it by employing these strategies and tools. Let me know how things are going or ask questions by using the comment section below. Good luck.
