Today, in our first post for the new year, we’re delving into something a little out in left field for this website, personal development, since many of my readers have the custom of writing or creating New Year’s Resolutions and this is a common resolution. Personal Development is a hot topic that seems to grow larger every year, but in 2022 it may become an even bigger issue with the persistent changes experienced in our economy wrought by the pandemic that affects our work lives. Your future of growth is all about your personal development and how you can tackle it on the world’s stage. This blog post will explore some effective ways to do just that!
How to tackle personal development
Personal development runs the gambit from managing your relationships, your emotions, or even helping you to reach your long-term professional or personal goals.
Get a coach
To grow and become the best possible version of yourself, you need someone who can help guide you on your journey. A personal development coach is there with you every step of the way, helping to keep you accountable and motivated. In addition, they can provide invaluable insight and support, which is why hiring a coach is one of the best ways to tackle your personal growth in 2022.
If you’re not sure where to find a good coach, try searching online or asking your friends, contacts, and relatives for recommendations. There are also many great books and resources out there designed to help you become all you want to be, a topic we’ll discuss next. So do your research before making a decision regarding how to progress on your personal journey.
A life coach may be exactly what you want to guide you on your journey.
Before hiring a coach, ensure they want to help you be all you can be rather than trying to put you in a box of their choosing. They should ask a lot of questions before making any recommendations, for instance. Part of their role is to identify inconsistencies in your thinking and to challenge your assumptions, so this isn’t always a pleasant process despite generating positive outcomes.
Among the skills a coach might work on with you are personal or professional goals such as:
- calming and destressing your life
- developing a positive outlook
- build better relationships with people around you, like co-workers and family, as well as relationships with things in your environment, such as your phone or video game console, which consume too large a percentage of your time
- develop mindfulness to get the most out of every moment rather than frittering your time waiting for something special
- take care of your health, including instituting measures to protect you from Covid-19. Other elements of your health are eating right, getting enough rest, checking in to ensure you’re up to date with your healthcare needs such as routine tests and office visits, including vision and dental
- gaining the skills you need to achieve your life goals, whether that’s taking a woodworking class or learning to code
Read books that offer guidance as you work on YOU
Books are a great way to learn more about personal development and self-improvement. The best part of reading a book is that you can do it anywhere, at your own pace! There are tons of books out there with valuable information that can help you grow as an individual. Here are just a few examples:
- Start With Why by Simon Sinek
- 12 Rules For Life by Jordan Peterson
- The 5 AM Club by Robin Sharma
Remember that, while books are valuable, they reflect strategies that worked for the author or some group of people. They don’t necessarily work for everyone and they might not work for you. Don’t feel bad if you can’t or don’t want to follow the edicts expressed by the author. For instance, making your bed every day might work great for the Admiral who wrote the book but it doesn’t work for me. I have a different routine that gets me set to take on the world every morning.
Once you found a book that seems like it will help you, read through it slowly. Take notes on what really resonates with you and try to apply what’s written in the book into your daily life. If there are any quotes you can relate to, write them down and put them somewhere where you will see them every day.
Remember, change takes time so cut yourself some slack. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t master everything in the book in the first week.
Attend seminars and workshops
There are many great seminars and workshops out there that focus on just the right elements you need to make progress on your journey. Depending on your learning style, workshops might be a great way to learn more about topics you want to work on in a short time, and often you can meet new people who share the same interests.
Some good resources for finding seminars and workshops include searching on Google. This is an easy way to discover what’s happening in your area or when you’re traveling. For example, just type in “personal development seminars” and see what comes up! With more workshops going virtual now, you have many more options.
Attend any workshops or seminars that seem interesting to you, regardless of whether they go along with your current goals or not. You can always learn something new, and you might meet some amazing people in the process!
Join a group or club
One great way to tackle personal development is by joining a group or club that focuses on your interests. Meetup is a great way to discover local groups that match your interests, plus, due to the pandemic, many of these meet online to increase your flexibility. You’ll find anything from a running club to a book club, as long as it’s something that you’re passionate about and will help you grow, it’s a great outlet.
Not only dies joining a group or two allow you to learn more about the topic, but it also allows you to meet new people who share your interests. This is a great way to make friends and connect with like-minded individuals.
Just be sure that the group or club you choose is reputable and has a good track record. Do some research online before signing up!
Conclusion
In conclusion, there are many great ways to tackle development in 2022. These are just a few examples, but you can choose whichever methods work best for you! The most important thing is to take action and get started right away. You have everything that you need inside of yourself already, so all you have to do is bring it out into the world!
