5 Critical Metrics for Achieving Website Domination

Today, we’ll introduce five critical metrics for achieving website domination. Last year, I wrote a blog post entitled “5 Keys to Website Domination“, in which I described how small business owners and managers can easily craft a high-quality website from beginning to end. Not only do I explain the steps and reasoning behind my recommendations, but I also link to my ebook that walks you through the process.

The ebook contains actual images and screenshots, that mean you don’t need any special training, experience, or coding ability to craft a website that markets your brand online. However, that post was incomplete, as it didn’t discuss metrics to determine if your strategy for achieving website domination is working or if there were ways to optimize your performance to increase profits.

Achieving website domination with 5 critical metrics

Website success, in 2026, depends on attracting the right target market, convincing them that your product is right for them, easing fears and frustration to generate a sale, following up on that sale to ensure customer satisfaction, then obtaining the reviews, recommendations, and repeat purchases that grow your business over time. Achieving website domination, then, means you create great content that both attracts internet users (since over 60% of all retail begins with an online search, even when products are purchased in a physical location) and offers the incentives and information necessary for users to decide the product is right for them. Thus, you need metrics to assess your success with SEO and content.

However, we’re now in an era when AI dominates much of what we do, including our search behavior. Instead of searching through the top links associated with our online query (SEO), we now turn to an AI tool, such as ChatGPT or Gemini, to provide solutions to our problems (consumers buy solutions, not products). Another way users now find solutions is by reading the answer snippet provided by the Google search engine, which appears before these rank-ordered links. Achieving website domination in 2026 requires you to craft content that is easy for these AI tools to read, understand, and categorize so that your brand shows up as an optional solution (termed GEO for geneative engine optimization).

The 5 metric types necessary for achieving website domination are:

  • Visibility and authority metrics
  • User engagement metrics
  • Conversion metrics
  • Technical performance metrics
  • Content health metrics

Visibility and authority metrics

Here we talk about four key metrics:

  • Organic search traffic, as well as traffic from AI tools
  • Keyword ranking
  • Domain authority
  • Share of voice

Organic search traffic still matters for achieving website domination, although less so than a year ago. You’ll find metrics related to organic search on Google Analytics, which is a powerful, free tool. In my ebook, I demonstrate how to connect Google Analytics to your website so you gain these valuable metrics.

Not only does Google Analytics provide details on organic search traffic, but it also provides details on other sources of traffic, including from AI tools. Another way to infer how you’re doing in appearing in AI content is by looking at your indirect or referral traffic, as Google often misclassifies AI traffic under these designations. You can dig deeper into the report by choosing the source/ medium tab at the top of the report or using the Explore menu option on the sidebar menu to create a custom report that chooses the RegEx filter on source/ medium.

Since matching your keywords to the user intent behind the query is important for both SEO and GEO, you need metrics to determine how many and which of your keywords (actually keyword phrases or long-tailed keywords) show up near the top in organic searches related to your brand. Achieving website domination means showing up in the top three spots.

improve your google rankingsYou can find keyword rankings in the Google Search Console (free) or paid tools like SEMrush and Ahrefs.

Domain authority or domain rating helps predict how your content will rank, as it’s a recognition of your online authority that comes from developing high-quality backlinks, optimizing your content for SEO, and improving technical website performance, such as speed, mobile performance, and fixing broken links. You can assess your domain authority using Moz or Ahrefs, which are both paid tools.

Share of voice reflects the percentage of the total search market for your keywords you capture compared to your competition.

User engagement metrics

Engaging your market on your website and social media greatly impacts your SEO and your authority. Since we’re focusing on your website, we’ll confine our discussion to these website engagement metrics:

  • Engagement rate
  • Average engagement time
  • Scroll depth

The longer visitors engage with your content and the more they actually interact with it, the better your content looks to search engines and AI tools that use these visitors’ evaluations, as humans, to support their machine algorithms. Bounce rate is the opposite of engagement, as it measures users who left after viewing a single page. Engagement rate assesses the percentage of sessions lasting more than 10 seconds, resulting in conversion, or visitors who viewed at least two pages. You’ll find this metric on the Google Analytics report under traffic acquisition.

Engagement time measures how long visitors interact with your page, such as scrolling down, clicking a link, or watching a video. You’ll find this metric in the Engagement Overview.

Scroll depth shows how far down the page visitors read. For long-form blog posts, you glean analytics to help you craft better content. You’ll find this metric in the Enhanced Measurement section; however, you must first turn this on using the Admin panel (under Data Streams).

Conversion metrics

Traffic doesn’t really matter that much. The key metric for achieving website domination is conversion. Here are some key metrics you might use to assess conversion:

The critical metrics for success include:

  • Conversion rate
  • Cost per acquisition (CPA)
  • Click-through rate (CTR)

Since there are many types of conversion, such as those listed in the graphic above, it’s best to set up Event tracking to identify which actions should be considered a conversion. For instance, you might set an event as submitting a subscription or contact form, downloading an asset, or clicking a link (for instance, leading to an app download site), in addition to completing a sale. You’ll find the conversion rate once you’ve set up Event Tracking by accessing Conversions under Engagement in the Reports tab.

CPA assesses how much of your budget you spent to acquire the conversion. You can calculate CPA by dividing your budget by the number of acquisitions. If you want, you can get pretty granular with these metrics by tagging posts or other links (as well as monitoring the costs for each action), then tracking them through your website to determine the number of conversions derived from each one.

CTR is available through the Google Search Console under search results. You can assess content to determine which ones result in higher CTR as a means to improve your content and for achieving website domination.

Technical performance metrics

Most of these metrics relate to how good a user experience you provide to visitors. These metrics are ranking factors, plus a good user experience improves many of the metrics we’ve already discussed. Here are the critical metrics in this category:

  • Core Web Vitals
  • Mobile usability

Core Web Vitals assess technical elements of your website such as speed, interactivity, and visual stability. You can get this metric, as well as a breakdown of these elements, through the Google Search Console. Mobile usability also comes from the search console under Mobile Usability. Since much of your traffic visits your website via a mobile device (and you can view the breakdown with desktop visits in Google Analytics), use a responsive theme, caching, and image minimization to improve your mobile performance.

Content health metrics

Here, we talk about two key metrics:

  • Backlink profile growth
  • Top performing pages

Backlink profile growth assesses the number of referring domains that link to your content. You’ll find this through the Google Search Console (Links), Ahrefs, or SEMrush.

Top-performing pages show which pieces of content create the most help in achieving website domination. You can easily find a breakdown of page performance by viewing the Engagement report on Google Analytics and breaking down the report by pages.

The Google Looker Studio for achieving website domination

The Google Looker Studio, formerly Google Data Studio, helps you create dashboards to accumulate all the metrics necessary to evaluate your website performance. You can combine data from both Google Analytics and the Google Search Console into a single dashboard, which eliminates trying to build insights from separate platforms.

marketing dashboards

Not only does the Google Looker Studio allow you to bring all the metrics for achieving website domination mentioned in this post together, but it allows you to create graphics that ease interpretation and help you glean insights more easily by looking at the graphic rather than columns of numbers.

The platform also allows you to view your data in different ways to glean deeper insights. For instance, you can compare one time period to another because the dashboards are interactive. Compare last quarter to this one or the same period this year to last year. Graphing these comparisons on a timeline further improves insights.

Another great way to use the Google Looker Studio is by building more nuanced metrics. For instance, by turning on demographics in the Admin panel, you can compare the performance of different groups of visitors (such as the one below, which shows how many pageviews per session resulted from visitors in the age and gender groups) to help you improve your marketing efforts. As you can see from this graphic, you can easily switch from the key metric of pages/ per session to any other metric tracked in Google Analytics.

universal analytics
Demographics based on PageViews/ visit

These nuanced insights, when combined with other metrics, help you make the data-driven decisions that are critical for achieving website domination. For instance, you might discover that visitors in the 55-64 age range are less likely to visit your website compared with every other group. That might be meaningless unless you also find that the conversion rate among this demographic is also higher. Armed with this insight, you can assess the performance of various keywords and pages with this demographic, and then use this information to build pages that attract this high-performing demographic to your website in higher numbers. Adding acquisition information to the mix allows you to not only create better content, but also know where to market that content to drive visitors from the key demographic of 55-64.

Conclusion

Here is a summary of the tools you can use to collect the critical metrics necessary for achieving website domination.

  1. Google Analytics 4 (Free): For user behavior and conversion tracking.
  2. Google Search Console (Free): For “Technical SEO” and organic keyword performance.
  3. PageSpeed Insights (Free): For UX and speed performance.
  4. Ahrefs, SEMrush, or Moz (Paid): For competitive analysis, backlink monitoring, and keyword gap analysis.

While you might not succeed in achieving website dominance overnight, in fact, that’s very unlikely, you’ll find that combining the insights I provided on building a website to achieve website dominance, combined with understanding and implementing the metrics recommended in this post, will grow your website and improve its performance over time.

You must collect the data, build data visualizations using the correct graphic (ie, line, pie, or scatter plots), generate insights, and implement data-driven decisions if you want to truly achieve website domination that grows your business and increases profits.
