As we’ve just finished graduation season and all those graduates are preparing to enter college or struggle to begin a career, it seems appropriate to consider the topic of building a career progression plan to help guide you through the rough waters ahead. As someone who’s at the end of my career, it makes sense for me to look back at how I might have handled things differently and pass that advice along to the next generation.

In today’s evolving job market, it’s crucial for every working individual to have a thought-out career progression strategy. Such a plan not only assists in goal setting but also aids in skill development, paving the way for success in one’s chosen profession. Just as all successful companies build a business plan that gets updated every year to take into consideration where the company is now and how conditions have changed, a career progression plan should have the flexibility to change as the demands of the outside world change, as well as to take advantage of unexpected opportunities.
What is a career progression plan?
A career progression plan is designed to help people identify their goals and create a roadmap for achieving them. It’s an ongoing process that involves setting short-term, intermediate, and long-term goals to provide focus and direction. It acts as a guide through the intricacies of the workplace, ensuring progress and growth. This article will delve into the importance of having a career progression plan and how developing a well-thought-out plan can positively impact one’s journey in the long run.
While your parents or grandparents might have worked for the same company throughout their careers, that’s not the case today. In fact, the average worker changes jobs every 3.7 years in the public sector and a little less (six years) in the public sector, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. As we saw during the pandemic, external factors can and do drastically change your career projections, so you need some flexibility to take advantage of new opportunities or respond to new challenges.
Developing a career projection plan
Next, let’s go through the steps necessary to create your plan, remembering that it’s important to balance your interests with opportunities. It’s also important to base your plan on facts from reliable sources rather than relying on your opinions, pressure from peers and family, or seat-of-the-pants thinking. So, without further ado, here we go.
1. Establishing concrete objectives
Crafting a career advancement strategy enables individuals to outline their long-term aspirations and objectives. Without goals, maintaining motivation, making decisions between options, and determining the optimal direction can prove challenging. A detailed plan provides guidance and transparency and helps professionals remain dedicated to advancing their careers.
Also, be realistic. Consider information sources such as salary guides, read job descriptions, plan to shadow someone in your chosen career, and ask around to get an accurate view of the day-to-day aspects of a job.
2. Assessing skills and expertise
Furthermore, career progression plans empower professionals to pinpoint the skills and competencies required for their desired career trajectory. By delineating the proficiencies, industry-specific knowledge, or soft skills essential at each phase of progression, individuals can actively focus on honing these areas. Developing concrete plans for improving skills is crucial for learning and growth, allowing professionals to keep up with the ever-changing demands of the job market that are necessary to meet your goals.
That starts with assessing your interests early, long before you graduate from high school, so you can adequately plan for the largest learning project of your life—college or trade school. If you like working with your hands, then maybe a trade school is the right place for you to learn a skill like plumbing or electrical. Don’t discount the value of trade schools, as workers in the trades earn a good living and nearly always find employment fast. If you enjoy coding, start by joining a coding club in high school or taking some online classes. Don’t let salary potential dictate your career choice but neither should you ignore the realities of gaining (and keeping) employment and earning a good salary.

3. Identifying opportunities for growth
When professionals have a career plan, they are more inclined to seek opportunities that support their long-term objectives. This could involve pursuing additional education, attending training sessions for certifications, or participating in industry events like conferences or workshops. Actively pursuing opportunities that prepare you for the next stage in your career progression will help you realize your goals by enhancing your skill set and building valuable connections and experiences.
Volunteer opportunities while still in training offer benefits to society, support causes you care about, and build the skills and connections that help you stand out for future employers.
4. Taking charge of career development
A well-defined career plan empowers professionals to take charge of their advancement instead of relying solely on external factors. Instead of waiting for promotions or external validation, those with career plans proactively seek out challenges, take on leadership roles, and embrace responsibilities within their organization. This proactive stance distinguishes professionals and increases their chances of progressing in their careers.
5. Adapting to change

A career plan is not set in stone; it should adapt to changing circumstances and goals. It’s important for professionals to regularly reassess and adjust their plans to remain aligned with evolving priorities and industry trends. Adapting to change enables individuals to seize opportunities and adjust to shifts in the job market.
6. Building professional relationships
Mapping out a career advancement strategy also underscores the significance of networking and fostering connections within one’s industry. Cultivating relationships with colleagues, mentors, or industry experts can offer insights, support, and potential career pathways. Networking plays a role in staying updated on industry developments, accessing job prospects, and securing mentorship opportunities that can boost advancement.
7. Boosting employability
A thought-out career advancement plan ensures that professionals uphold the skills sought after by employers in a job landscape. It showcases an individual’s dedication to development and drive to accomplish challenging objectives. Demonstrating skill enhancement further elevates employability, making individuals candidates for elevated roles within companies.
8. Embrace mentorship
One asset in career progression is engaging with a mentor who can steer and bolster your professional journey. A mentor is someone with proficiency and experience in your chosen field who can offer insights, share experiences, and provide counsel. They can assist you in navigating obstacles, identifying prospects, and offering direction on accelerating your career aspirations.
9. Embrace new challenges
Actively seek mentors who share your goals and have conversations to benefit from their knowledge. Embrace challenges to advance in your career by stepping outside your comfort zone. Taking risks, such as volunteering for demanding projects or exploring roles, helps you grow professionally and showcases your drive to potential employers or leaders in your company. Embracing challenges not only allows you to acquire new skills but also demonstrates adaptability, resilience, and a thirst for learning – traits highly sought after in today’s competitive job market.
10. Regularly evaluate your progress
Regularly assess your progress to ensure you are on track with your career goals. Establish checkpoints – whether monthly or annually – to evaluate achievements, areas needing improvement, and any obstacles faced. This self-evaluation empowers you to make decisions about adjusting your strategies and maintaining focus on achieving success in your career.
Conclusion
In today’s changing workplace, it’s essential for professionals to have a career advancement strategy to ensure long-term success and advancement in their chosen field. This plan allows individuals to establish objectives, hone abilities, pinpoint growth prospects, steer their career paths, adjust to evolving situations, forge industry relationships that resonate with their values, and boost their job prospects along the journey.
