Did you know there are local SEO hacks that can drive your content toward the top when user queries match your keywords? These hacks require a combination of SEO (search engine optimization) while crushing extra SEO tools available only to local businesses. If you think your local company should gain more customers and achieve better growth, optimizing your SEO strategy will deliver results. Let’s delve into SEO and local SEO and then find some local SEO hacks that will help you achieve your marketing goals.

What is SEO, and how does it impact your business performance?

First up, SEO

The graphic above shows several key elements of SEO. First, note that organic traffic to your site represents about 53% of all traffic visiting your site. For small local businesses and B2B brands, the proportion of visits driven through organic search is even higher. The graphic also shows how you can improve your search rank by matching your strategy (especially content) to capitalize on the Google Algorithm. Not only does Google search reflect nearly 90% of all search volume, but other search engines often use the Google Algorithm as a starting point in building their own.

The Google Search Algorithm contains a large number of variables with different weights assigned to each variable. The algorithm isn’t published and is changed frequently. Experts use testing to determine those factors with the highest impact on your content’s rank. These are listed below.

  • content quality metrics such as visits, return visits, bounce rate (a negative impact), number of pages viewed, time on site
  • mobile-friendliness
  • a close match between keywords and query terms
  • quality signals such as social media engagement and backlinks from high-quality websites
  • fast load speeds
  • technical SEO factors like clean coding and schema
  • providing a good customer journey

The reality is that SEO depends on both site-level and page-level factors. Before you begin working on local SEO agency, you need to get your global SEO strategy right—partnering with a local SEO agency can help ensure both strategies align effectively.

One of the most important local SEO hacks involves getting to know your local community.

  • What are the people like who live there?
  • Who are your competitors in the area?
  • Are there quirks in the language among residents? For instance, in Pittsburgh, we used “yous” as the plural of you.
  • Do local residents face any unique challenges or problems?
  • Where can you network in the area?

Armed with this information, you’re now ready to put together your local SEO hacks.

1. Optimize your Google Business Profile

Google offers local businesses a free business profile and offers local SEO hacks you can easily use in building your strategy. You should claim a profile for your business and then flesh it out entirely with high-quality images, information like hours and services, and post updates such as holiday offers. You should also request reviews from satisfied customers and respond to reviews posted on your profile. Ensure you use your chosen keywords within the profile.

A word on choosing keywords, which we’ve mentioned a few times in this post.

Since the match between keywords identified in your content and those used in building a query, choosing the right keywords is crucial for your success. You can find keywords by using the Google Keyword Planning tool, which is part of the Google Ads platform. While using the planning tool is free, you must create a Google Ads account. If you later decide to use Google Ads as part of your promotional strategy, you might want to consult with a Google Adwords agency to help you in the beginning.

Using the planner is straightforward. You enter a keyword (actually a phrase containing your keyword) along with your industry, and Google provides suggested keywords along with additional information. You can see the sample report below, which shows average monthly searches and the level of competition for the keyword. The sweet spot is to choose a keyword with a large number of searches and low competition. This is more art than science, however.

Since you can only use each keyword once, you must create long-tailed keywords by building a phrase around your keyword. With more users choosing voice search through devices like Alexa and Siri, these long-tailed keywords also provide a closer match to the query used.

2. Get listings in local directories

Reach out to the local Chamber of Commerce (some areas offer multiple organizations of this type), Bing, and Yelp, and create business pages on Facebook and other platforms. Ensure consistency by including the same information and images across all listings and use uniform colors and fonts whenever possible.

Data aggregators, such as Moz Local and BrightLocal offer opportunities to get your business listed.

3. Local keyword optimization

Use keywords that fit your geographical area, such as best SEO in Detriot. Some companies go so far as to include their geographic region in their domain name, although this can really hurt when you expand your territory. Consider Kentucky Fried Chicken, which started and was headquartered in that state. Over time, the company became KFC to de-emphasize the Kentucky affiliation, as well as to reduce the relationship between fried and unhealthy as consumer concerns evolved.

You can include location-based keywords in every area where keywords impact rank, including:

  • titles
  • meta descriptions
  • headers
  • content
  • URL
  • image alt tags

The benefit of this is that local listings often appear near the top on search results pages (SERPs), along with maps and other information, to entice local users to shop at your business. Below is a real example of a local business result on Google.

4. Get more reviews

As you see in the listings above, search engines display your reviews in the results, with more detailed reviews on your profile. Hence, you want to encourage satisfied customers to provide positive Google reviews. You might offer a small incentive, such as a discount in exchange for reviews; however, don’t require a positive review in exchange or you can lose credibility.

When a customer posts a review, thank them. If the review is negative, ask how you can make them better. For instance, maybe you can replace the product or offer a discount on future purchases.

5. Leverage local backlinks

Local backlinks likely matter more to your customers and prospects than other backlinks. You can gain these backlinks by sponsoring local events, charities, or sports teams. Reach out to local newspapers by sending press releases to encourage backlinks. It also makes sense to reach out to owners of other businesses and blogs in your area as a way to gain backlinks from these locals.

6. Generate local content

Creating valuable content on a consistent basis is the most important single tactic if you want to optimize your search ranking. When that content is interesting and valuable to local residents, you gain even more bang. Hence, this is a tremendous local SEO hack. Here are examples of the type of local content you might use to attract a local audience:

  • Local events, news, and issues important to your local customers
  • “Best of” guides are a great way to create evergreen content that appeals to local residents. Be sure to update this content at least once a year so it’s always current.
  • Create video content that features local venues, events, and testimonials from local residents.

7. Improve your website

As I said earlier, SEO is vital for your website. In addition to the normal SEO advice I give my clients, try embedding a Google map on your website or creating a link so users can get interactive guidance to find your locations. Also, use local terms and local schema markup on your site.

8. Social media

Social media still works, although you’ll find it harder to gain visitors from your social media platforms as these companies focus more on revenue generation (see graphic above). You’ll still find local groups offer a great way to reach local consumers and some of these groups do a great job of attracting locals within your market niche, such as those interested in gardening or local restaurants. You can also explore social media advertising, which is very affordable, especially when you consider the targeting tools available so you only reach your target market without wasting money on users who aren’t in that market.

Reach out to local influencers to build a relationship with them that delivers mentions.

9. Track and measure performance

Tools like Google Analytics and Google Search Console are free. Despite this, the insights they offer are invaluable. You should monitor your performance on a daily basis and use analytic tools like visualization and segmentation to develop deep insights.

The analysis only works if you measure the right things. Avoid vanity metrics such as follower counts and clicks (although the change in these metrics does have some meaning). Instead, spend your efforts on KPIs (key performance indicators) like conversion rate (especially over time), time on site, which platforms and posts send the most traffic to your website, and social media engagement.

Armed with these insights, you can tweak your strategies to optimize your performance. advanced digital metrics
