Starting your own business is hard, and achieving success in your new venture is even more complicated as various challenges arise that threaten to derail your best efforts. If you’ve found you struggle to achieve the success you envisioned or that things are getting a little stagnant, it’s time to reevaluate. It’s easy to get lost in the weeds and forget to keep a firm grip on the aspects that best lead to success, and becoming disillusioned with why you’re doing this in the first place is common. So, today, I’d like to discuss three critical pillars for optimizing your business if you want to achieve success.

As with anything in life, there are many ups and downs. Reflecting on core values and practices during these moments can make all the difference, so use this short article to give you a quick refresher on what’s important!
Optimizing your business for success
First, let’s start by identifying what we mean by success. There’s no one right definition of what we mean by success. Success is whatever you think it is. That’s why every business owner or prospective owner needs to start out with clearly defined goals and objectives that reflect where you intend the business to go. That way, you have a yardstick to measure success. By setting concrete goals, such as X amount of revenue and time limits, such as a year, you can say at the end of that time whether you achieved the goal or not. That’s success. As time goes on, you modify your goals for the next time period based on the results you achieved in the most recent time periods. We discussed SMART goals in an earlier post, so you should definitely check out those instructions on how to create SMART goals and how to use them to aid in decision-making.

Now that you have your goals, it’s time to start optimizing your business to achieve those goals.
Using the right tools for the right job
It would be best if you established metrics related to your success. We call these KPIs or key performance indicators because they correlate with success in achieving your goals. Avoid monitoring vanity metrics, such as the number of fans on a social media platform, as this metric doesn’t correlate with success.
Most KPIs make more sense and act as a better guide to optimizing your business when viewed over time rather than as a point in time. Even the growth of your fan base acquires meaning when viewed longitudinally, as it demonstrates that your brand is becoming better known and gaining trust in your marketplace.
Monitoring KPIs quickly alerts you to a slump in efficiency, productivity, sales, or another salient metric, which can be as related to something as simple as not using the right tools. Sometimes, it can take a while before you realize things have taken a downturn, and it’s best to first examine your systems as a whole to identify any weak links.
For example, it could be the way your analog systems meld with digital ones: if possible, it might be time to make the painful switch to all digital to prevent any slowdown in moving data around or updating and storing company records.
It’s also vital to go through each system you use systematically and determine how it’s functioning as part of the broader picture. Once you’ve discovered a weak point, you can work together with your staff to upgrade.
Managing your finances
Keeping your finances in order is, of course, an essential aspect of any prosperous business, but plenty of people go wrong by trying to do this all on their own. The time taken to complete your books could be putting a massive strain on your ability to keep other aspects of your business running smoothly – not to mention that making mistakes can prove very costly in some instances. If you don’t have the knowledge, experience, and training to understand the intricacies of monitoring your books, paying taxes, and maintaining a suitable cash flow, you could quickly find yourself in a dire situation.
There’s a lot to go wrong when you’re talking bookkeeping and taxes, so it always pays to work with Chartered Accounts – professionals who really know what they’re doing – to complete the work for you. Naturally, this frees up time to spend growing your business in other areas, playing to your strengths, and letting others with the appropriate skill set manage things you can’t.
Managing a team
If you manage a team of staff, your ability to do so is one area you should consider seriously if you’re interested in optimizing your business.
- Have you provided your staff with everything they need to do their work, such as training and the authority to act in the company’s best interest?
- Do you hold regular meetings to ensure all is going smoothly across each different area of the business?
- Have you taken care to make sure your staff are happy at work and feel valued?
- Have you delegated responsibilities so staff isn’t constantly waiting on your decisions to accomplish the most straightforward task?
- Do you offer clear lines of authority so your staff knows who is responsible for which tasks and there aren’t struggles between departments over who has the authority to make decisions?
- Do departments work well together, or are there constant struggles between them?
Your staff is everything, and you won’t get anywhere without a strong team of dedicated individuals who truly believe in what they do. If you want to be successful, it’s your job to facilitate this sort of environment.
Wrapping up
Hopefully, this article has given you some pointers for optimizing your business for continual improvement during tough times. It might not be easy, but with enough dedication, you’ll soon overcome any temporary roadblocks you’re currently facing.
